The thrill is gone before the wrapper hits the floor.

The card companies figured out the math a long time ago: print everything, then paper over the overproduction with 40 different colored refractor parallels of the exact same player. Same card. Different foil. Call it a "rainbow." Charge accordingly. It's artificial scarcity layered on top of genuine abundance, and collectors keep paying for it because the idea of the pull is still addictive as hell.

The absurdity doesn't stop at sports. We are currently living in a world where people pay a premium to chase 1/1 autographs of obscure background characters from Topps Disney Neon — characters they can barely name, pulled from a product nobody was actually asking for. Why We Built This
